The Indian Trade Service (ITS) is a Group A civil service, formed in 1965. It was created as a specialized cadre to handle India’s international trade and commerce. The ITS is controlled by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce.

The department is divided into the following nine divisions:

  • International Trade Policy Division
  • Foreign trade regional division
  • Export products division
  • Export industries division
  • Export services division
  • Economic division
  • Administration and General Services Division
  • Finance Department Supply Department

➼ Indian trade service Examination Syllabus

The syllabus of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination is divided into three categories.

  1. Preliminary
  2. Mains
  3. Interview

The introductory course is mainly designed for a candidate’s understanding of current affairs and assessment of aptitude within the stipulated time. The introductory paper is a compulsory and qualified paper.

The syllabus of Mains is basically designed to assess the educational expertise of a candidate in his particular subject.

The curriculum also focuses on testing the aspirations’ ability to present knowledge in a clear and consistent manner. The main exam has 9 papers and the syllabus is designed according to the specified subjects.

The syllabus of preliminary and mains is designed for the written examination. Candidates, who clear the preliminary and main examination, can appear for the interview.

Note 1: The Papers on Indian Languages and English will be of Matriculation or equivalent standard and will be of qualifying nature only. The marks obtained in these papers will not be counted for ranking.

Note 2: The candidates will have to answer the English and Indian Languages papers in English and the respective Indian language (except where translation is involved)

➼ Indian Trade Service Eligibility Criteria:

1) Nationality:

Nationality of a candidate must be either of the following:

  • Citizen of India
  • Subject of Nepal
  • Subject of Bhutan
  • A Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962 for permanent settlement in India.
  • Migrant from any of the following countries for permanently settling in India:
  • Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam

2) Educational Qualification:

Candidate should have a degree from any recognized university or its equivalent qualification.

  • The candidate must contain a bachelor’s degree in at least one subject, such as animal husbandry and veterinary science, botany, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics, statistics and zoology or agriculture or forest or engineering of a recognized university. Bachelor Degree. equal.
  • Candidates appearing in their degree examination (with prescribed subjects) can also compete. If they pass on the result of the written part of the examination, they will have to produce proof of passing the required examination along with their detailed application form to be filled at that stage.

3) Age Limit :

  1. Minimum age 21 years
  2. Maximum age 30 years on 1 August in the year of examination.

Relaxable age limit is as follows:

  1. For SC / ST candidates: Maximum 5 years
  2. For OBC candidates: Maximum 3 years
  3. For candidates from Jammu and Kashmir state: Maximum 5 years
  4. For Defense Services Personnel: Maximum 5 years
  5. For Ex-Servicemen including commissioned officers and ECOs / SSCOs who have served at least 5 years of military service and have been released: Maximum 5 years
  6. For ECOs / SSCOs who have completed the initial period of 5 years of military service: Maximum 5 years
  7. For the Blind, Deaf-dumb and Orthopedically Handicapped: Maximum 10 years

4) Number of attempts:

The maximum number of attempts restriction is as follows:

  • For General category candidates: 6 attempts
  • For OBC candidates: 9 attempts
  • For SC/ST candidates: No restriction
  • Physically handicapped- 9 attempts for general and OBC, while unlimited for SC/ST

➼ ITS Interview

The interview is one of the most important parts of the ITS exam. It’s very necessary for you to clearly state your thoughts to the interviewers.

As a result, you need to focus on brightening your communication skills and body language. Some candidates are blessed with such skills.

Some require practice to become excellent communicators of their ideas. Candidates with no communication skills can contact those who have already appeared in the Civil Services Examinations, to get useful suggestions from them.

Because this portion of the Civil Services Examination is not designed to judge someone’s expertise on a subject.

However, a candidate must speak from the heart or answer all questions honestly.

There is a common misconception among the candidates that if they lie about their hobby just to get through the interview, it will never help them.

Interviewers are not just to ask questions, but to evaluate a candidate’s personality and ability to evaluate whether a ‘no’ is a ‘no’, it cannot be changed to a ‘yes’ and vice versa.

➼ How to apply for ITS Exam

  • Candidates are required to apply online on the website www.upsconline.nic.in
  • Applicants are advised to submit a single application only.
  • In certain unavoidable situations, if more than one application is made, the applicant must make sure that the application with higher RID (Registration ID) is complete in all respects.
  • Candidates already in Government Service, Government owned industrial undertakings or other similar organisations or in private employment should submit their applications direct to the Commission.
  • Candidates already in Government Service, whether in a permanent or temporary capacity or as work-charged employees other than casual or daily rated employees or those serving under the Public Enterprises are, however, required to submit an undertaking that they have informed in writing to their Head of Office/Department that they have applied for the Examination.
  • Candidates should note that in case a communication is received from their employer by the Commission withholding permission to the candidates applying for/appearing at the examination, their application will be liable to be rejected/candidature will be liable to be cancelled.
